Is Marijuana the Same Thing as Cannabis?

The terms “marijuana” and “cannabis” are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct meanings and connotations. While both refer to the same plant species, their usage can vary based on context, culture, and legality.

Cannabis: The Broad Term

“Cannabis” is the scientific name for a genus of plants that includes Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. It is the broadest term used to describe all parts of the plant, including its flowers, seeds, and derivatives. The term encompasses both the psychoactive and non-psychoactive forms of the plant and is often used in scientific, medical, and legal contexts.

Marijuana: A Specific Aspect of Cannabis

“Marijuana,” on the other hand, is a term typically used to describe varieties of cannabis that contain higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound responsible for the psychoactive “high.” This term became widespread in the United States in the early 20th century and has historically been associated with the recreational and medicinal use of cannabis with intoxicating effects.

Hemp vs. Marijuana

An important distinction within cannabis is the difference between hemp and marijuana:

  • Hemp refers to cannabis plants with a THC content of 0.3% or less, making them non-psychoactive. Hemp is often used for industrial purposes, such as textiles, food, and CBD (cannabidiol) products.
  • Marijuana typically refers to cannabis plants with higher THC levels, used primarily for medicinal or recreational purposes.

Why It Matters

The distinction between “cannabis” and “marijuana” has implications in legal, medical, and cultural conversations. The term “cannabis” is often used to emphasize the plant’s therapeutic and industrial benefits and to avoid the historically negative connotations associated with “marijuana.”

While all marijuana is cannabis, not all cannabis is marijuana. “Cannabis” serves as the overarching scientific term, while “marijuana” refers specifically to THC-rich varieties of the plant. Understanding this distinction helps clarify discussions around legality, medical applications, and social perceptions of cannabis use.
